Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) held its 2026 Hong Kong Spring Reception on April 11, bringing together nearly 400 distinguished guests, senior university representatives, and alumni. Under the theme "Going Global," the event showcased SYSU's expanding presence in the Greater Bay Area and marked the official launch of a new initiative aimed at supporting alumni enterprises as they pursue international development.

Liu Chenggong, Chairman of the University Council, opened the event by expressing his sincere appreciation to leaders and partners across Hong Kong for their longstanding support. He underscored SYSU's strategic integration into the Greater Bay Area and highlighted the important role of the newly established Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong in advancing the university's mission.

Liu highlighted that by attracting world‑class scholars—such as Professor Zhang Yitang—and strengthening partnerships with leading institutions in Hong Kong, the Institute is poised to become a major driver of scientific innovation in the region. He emphasized that SYSU will continue to leverage Hong Kong's unique global connectivity to provide strong intellectual support for alumni enterprises seeking to expand internationally.
Yeung Cheung Ying, President of the Sun Yat-sen University United Alumni Association (Hong Kong), extended a warm welcome to all attendees and underscored the Association's dual role as both a cornerstone of the alumni community and a strategic bridge for collaboration. She outlined the association's forward-looking agenda, announcing plans to establish dedicated business clubs and expert think tanks to accelerate the global development of alumni-led enterprises.

A highlight of the evening was an academic sharing session delivered by Professor Zhang Yitang, a world‑renowned mathematician and faculty member of the Sun Yat-sen University Institute of Advanced Studies Hong Kong.
Professor Zhang captivated the audience as he recounted the journey behind his groundbreaking work on the Twin Prime Conjecture. His presentation offered profound intellectual insights while exemplifying the rigorous and resilient scientific spirit that SYSU seeks to cultivate within its academic community.

The event also marked the official launch of the Overseas Economic Alliance of Sun Yat-sen University Alumni Enterprises, establishing a new platform to support the global development of alumni-led businesses.
Huang Ruimin, Secretary‑General of the SYSU Alumni Association, reviewed the achievements of the alumni economic initiatives over the past year and called for the new alliance to harness the collective strength of the global alumni network to deepen international collaboration.

The Alliance will draw on the Greater Bay Area's strategic strengths to offer comprehensive professional services—including legal compliance, investment support, and logistics—to help alumni enterprises navigate and compete in global markets.
Showcasing the real-world impact of alumni innovation, SYSU alumnus and entrepreneur Hu Xing shared his inspiring journey of breaking foreign technological monopolies in the avionics sector and contributing to major domestic aircraft programs such as the C919 and C929.

The event also served as an important moment of transition and recognition. The 14th Council of the Sun Yat-sen University United Alumni Association (Hong Kong) was formally inaugurated, marking the beginning of a new chapter in alumni governance.



In addition, awards were presented to alumni who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and service to the community. A charity silent auction was also held, with proceeds supporting ongoing alumni initiatives and philanthropic programs.





The event also featured captivating collaborative performances by students and faculty from SYSU's School of Arts and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, presenting a seamless blend of Eastern and Western musical traditions.





The 2026 Spring Reception concluded with a stirring chorus of the university's alumni anthem, reaffirming the enduring bond between SYSU and its global community as they embark on a new era of shared growth and collaboration.
